On 21st January, 1915, the 1st East Surrey battalion of 14 Brigade, 5th Division relieved the 1st Cornwall Light Infantry in the front line north-east of Wulverghem in Belgium. After recent heavy rain and being close to the swollen banks of the River Douve, the trenches here were waterlogged and the two days spent here were not pleasant ones. The few casualties that they suffered, including William Allard who was killed on 22nd January were the result of enemy snipers. |
